Presented in Celebration of Belmont’s 150th Anniversary

Director: Douglas Cooper

Synopsis of Play:

The story is about an affable man Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary friend Harvey, a six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall rabbit. When Elwood starts to introduce Harvey, a pooka, to guests at a society party, his society-obsessed sister Veta has seen as much of his eccentric behavior as she can tolerate. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium to spare her daughter Myrtle Mae and their family from future embarrassment.

The cast consists of 6 women and 6 men:

Miss Johnson

(? 30-50) Maid at the Dowd’s home.

Nurse Ruth Kelly

(any age) Taxi Driver - Accustomed to bringing patients to Chumley’s sanitarium when they are cheerful and happy, and then taking them back after “treatment” and finding them mean and angry.

Dr. Lyman Sanderson

(35-45) Very qualified young psychiatrist who is secretly infatuated with Nurse Kelly.

Myrtle Mae Simmons

(30-40) Elwood’s niece, daughter of Veta - Anxious to find a husband and concerned that suitors will be frightened away by Elwood and his friend Harvey. Becomes very attracted to the hospital’s orderly, Duane Wilson.

Veta Louise Simmons

(50-60) An important character in the play - Elwood’s sister, who is very concerned about her social position, embarrassed by his eccentricity, and fears for her daughter’s marriage prospects.

Duane Wilson

(30-50) Hospital orderly - Their “muscle” who deals with the patients - vulgar and crude but devoted to Dr. Chumley. He flirts with Myrtle Mae.
